School Emergency Drills

JUNE 22, 2016- A total of 928 participants joined in the earthquake drill, that composed of 898 pupils (463 boys and 403 girls), 30 teaching and non-teaching personnel. The drill lasted for 4 minutes and 27 seconds.

JULY 29, 2016- For the morning session a total 987 participants took part of the drill. Of the said number of participants 956 were pupils (501 boys and 455 girls) and 31 were teaching and non-teaching personnel. The drill lasted for 4 minutes and 17 seconds. In the afternoon a total of 880 participants joined in the earthquake drill, that composed of 851 pupils (433 boys and 418 girls), 29 teaching and non-teaching personnel. The drill lasted for 4 minutes and 45 seconds.

August 30, 2016 - A total of 942 participants joined in the earthquake drill, that composed of 911 pupils (473 boys and 438 girls), 31 teaching and non-teaching personnel. The drill lasted for 5 minutes and 07 seconds. For the afternoon session a total 803 participants took part of the drill. Of the said number of participants 774 were pupils (405 boys and 369 girls) and 29 were teaching and non-teaching personnel. The drill lasted for 4 minutes and 58 seconds.

Orientations spearheaded by Mrs. Jocelyn A. Navarro, SDRRMC chairman was conducted on the following dates:

C. Demo on How to Duck Cover and Hold

Before the actual drill, each classroom adviser gave specific instructions on what to do during an earthquake, they introduce the Duck, Cover and Hold. Aside from the Duck, Cover and hold the pupils were given the following instructions:

1. Take cover under a sturdy table or strongly supported doorway.

2. Watch out for falling objects.

3. Keep calm and don’t panic.

Activity During the Drill

A. Signal of Bell/ Alarm

A 1-minute bell rang signified a 1 minute strong shake.

B. Duck, Cover and Hold

Once the bell was heard participants did the expected actions. They performed the Duck, Cover and Hold.

C. Evacuation and Assembly

After the 1-minute siren, students quietly went out of the room and

proceeded to the previously designated open space. At the designated evacuation area, students were grouped together according to the class where they belong.

D. Head Count

Teachers made a head count in the ground and reported it to the incident commander.

Activity After the Drill (Evaluation and Reorientation )

Participant converged at the school covered court for the evaluation of the drill. The assigned observers gave their comments and suggestions on how to correct or improved the activity.

Summary, Problems Encountered and Recommendations/ Solutions

This narrative report tells our experiences during the earthquake drill. The knowledge, learning or insights, and experiences we got are remarkable.

A. Problems Encountered

  1. According to an observer not all participants of the drill performed the Duck, Cover and Hold.

  2. Some participants ran on their way to the safe holding area.

  3. Few participants do not take the drill seriously, they talked and laughed.

  4. There was congestion at the gate on participants going to the evacuation area

B. Solutions and Recommendation

Through the help of the observers and the Faculty of Maypajo Elementary

School the following solutions/recommendations were given:

1. Classroom adviser/teacher should allot specific.

2. Teachers should give specific instruction on what to do as soon as the ringing of bell stops like ;

a. Be alert .

b. Don’t push, Don’t Run, Don’t Talk

c. Walk out the classroom in orderly manner.

d. Never go back to the building.

3. Additional exit points to avoid congestion on the flow of traffic.

4. Earthquake drills should be done on a regular basis (once a month)
